OK Insurance Commissioner’s Race May Have Got Doak’ed

As the runoff elections for Republican OK Insurance Commissioner was coming to an end between Doak and Crawford, I was becoming more leery of Doak. I voted for Doak in the primary but late developments of accusations and campaign activities started to make me very suspicious of Doak’s purpose. Doak may not be the political “darling” that can bring the likes of a Charlie Meadows and Mike Huckabee or a Richard Engle and a JC Watts together without some baggage to do so. Whenever the grassroots Conservatives side with the old guard Republicans and endorse a candidate in a primary…my political radar starts to smell a rat. So I looked into my suspicion and found this….

Players:

Stephen Jones: He was one of the first contributors to John Doak’s campaign in the amount of $5000. Mr. Jones was the attorney who represented Timothy McVeigh in court. More importantly, Mr. Jones is good friends with Gene Phillips, a Texas real estate billionaire who became known in Oklahoma for the scandal of racketeering former Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher. Mr. Jones has been known to take OK Legislatures down to Phillips’ home in Dallas and wine and dine them for favors in return. Stephen Jones and Gene Phillips also threw a fundraiser during the last Presidential primary for Mike Huckabee in which Huckabee personally raised the most money in one night for himself. Mr. Jones and Mr. Phillips are not some everyday grassroots conservative who dabble in the world of politics. These are big-hitters and their influence was a major reason Mike Huckabee concerned himself in a little-known race for Insurance Commissioner in Oklahoma. Mr. Jones has taken such a big interest in John Doak that his many connections have also contributed to John Doak’s campaign.

L.O. Ward- Mr. Ward is President of an Oil and Gas business in Enid and Stephen Jones is his attorney who represented him in court. These two are good friends. Ward gave $1000 to John Doak on June 30th.

April Davis- Mrs. Davis is an attorney who works in the law firm Mr. Jones owns. She gave John Doak $2000 on July 16th.

Amber Brock- She is also an attorney that works at Mr. Jones’ law firm. She gave John Doak $5000 on July 23rd.

Terry Holmes- She is a former school teacher in Bartlesville and Mr. Jones was her lawyer during the divorce of her husband. Ms. Holmes and Jones have teamed up before when she gave a max donation to Bill Case during his campaign for Insurance Commissioner against Kim Holland. She also maxed out on John Doak’s campaign…$4000.

Johnny Lombard- He is an attorney that works at Jones’ law firm. He gave John Doak $4000.

Timothy Clark- He is the president of a company in Mendon, MA named RFC. He is friends with Stephen Jones and gave $4000 to John Doak’s campaign.

The above total is $25,000. This is the type of stuff that throws up the red flags for me. What interest do Stephen Jones and Gene Phillips have in the John Doak campaign? Why would the same players who were linked in racketeering with Former Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher also have such an “invested” interest in John Doak’s race for Insurance Commissioner? Why would a Washington insurance lobbyist, Frank Keating, and another lobbyist, JC Watts, make an endorsement for John Doak?

There is never coincidence in politics and I may not know all the reasons why the dots are not connecting, but like I said before….I smell a rat.

  1. James,

I know almost all of these people... and they always donate to GOP candidates! Mr. Jones was also the attorney for Tim Pope during the entire persecution by Drew Edmondson. And for Lew Ward, he is a generous Republican who is willing to help fund GOP candidates, always has been generous! In the world of politics, there are people who have money and want to be sure the better GOP candidate is elected. Just like me, I would bet that all of them did not want another nightmare with Mr. Crawford as the candidate for Insurance Commissioner. And just like me, they believe John Doak will be a good Insurance Commissioner for Oklahoma.

  2. Mr. Parsons,
Gov. Huckabee concerned himself with "a little-known race for Insurance Commissioner in Oklahoma" because Mr. Doak's opponent, John Crawford, posed a dangerous threat to the Republican ticket in November. You failed to mention that in your post. The GOP required a strong candidate for the Insurance Commissioner's nomination - and I am thankful that we have one.

  3. It's interesting how Mr. Jone's firm is now a counsel for the Commissioner's office dealing with the receivership of at least two insurance companies.

And by the way, he represents some defendants in another suit brought by the Commissioner's office. The defendants were the owners/officers of an insurance company placed into receivership by the prior commissioner.

How can his firm both represent, and oppose the commissioner's office? Isn't this a conflict of interest?
